The BBC makes amazing shows. If you’ve never watched an british shows you are really missing out. I have always loved all things british. My dad is british, growing up I had always wished that I was british too and that we lived in the United Kingdom. So that lead to me falling in love with british culture from afar.
I started watching a lot of british shows, following the british monarchy and reading the history. This is where I discovered my love for anne boleyn. I will tell you guys my top five favorite britsh tv shows. I hope some of them surprise you.
Torchwood
Torchwood is actually a spin off, of Doctor Who, Ironically i watched this first. That's the story of my life, doing things in the wrong order. Torchwood is about a secret government agency that fights aliens and keeps them a secret from the public.
This is still one of the funniest shows that i've ever seen. We followed these alien hunters on their adventures. Its funny but seariuse at the same time. The first two seasons were my favorite, the third season broke my heart and i never watched the fourth season because they had changed all the actors and characters and they partnered with a US company to make it and that killed it. It was now to americanized, it had lost all of its quirky britishness, that I love but I still love it and I still recommend anyone to watch this!
2. Doctor Who
Doctor who has been on the air for years. It was originally started in 1963, it was popular back then. They stopped making for a while and then in 2005 they picked it back up. Since the doctor who is about an alien that travels through time and space and he regenerates and changes his face, whenever he wants, it makes it easy to keep the show going without worrying about the original actors or when they want to leave. I have never seen the originals seasons, I only started watching it when they restarted it in 2005.
Im always saying that im going to watch the originals but i never do, maybe one day. For this show being about aliens, it also has some amazing lessons. This show really helped me grow up and face responsibilities. David Tennet and Matt Smith are ties for my favorite doctors. I haven’t watched the new season yet, but im super proud that they made the newest doctor a woman.
3. Doc Martin
I love medicinal shows, even though I don’t understand any of the medical terms like grey's anatomy, private practice and royal pains. My dad is actually the one that got me into doc Martin, he was watching it one night when I sat down and watched it with him. I loved it. It’s quirky and cringe at the same time.
It’s about a London surgeon that develops a fear of blood, so he moves to this little down to be their primary doctor, but he’s also very socially awkward with parents that never taught him how to socialize or talk to people in a normal way, so he aliens everyone and at first no one likes him. Eventually he wins them over with saving a lot of lives and by being a good doctor then he falls in love and so on.
It really showed me that no matter how awkward I am, there really is someone out there for everyone, and that you can overcome any challenge. Whether it’s a phobia or your upbringing.
4. Victoria
If you've been following me for awhile, you know that I love history and I love royal british history. I’ve watched the tudors, but it's not my favorite it's too americanized, made to be so inaccurate under the guise of making it more fun or drama filled. When the actual history had plenty of drama. I haven’t watched The white queen, the white princess or the spanish princess because philippa gregory is not to be trusted.
Masterpiece has made a huge effort to keep their victoria series very close to history. Not only do I love the actor that they chose for each part, but they tell the story in a great heart wrenching way that really pulls at my emotions. Before i started watching this show i didn;t really know all that much about Victoria, watching this show has encouraged me to research her in more depth and made me love her story as well.
5. Sherlock
Who hasn’t seen at least one kind of sherlock? There’s the Robert Downey Jr movies, which weren’t very good, the old movies and shows, CBS Elementary and finally BBS Sherlock. I have yet to see Elementary, I do want to I have heard good things about it and it has Natalie Dormer in it, i love her.
I also love Benedict Cumberbatch he plays Sherlock. I love this version of Sherlock because its funny, gritty and portrayed Sherlock's personality in a new kind of way. They never say if Sherlock is on the autisic spectrum or what causes his savier social awkwardness. The shows shows the way his brain processes his clues his sees in crime scene with screen caps on the tv screen so the audience is following his mind. I think that a very clever way of doing it. I haven;t watched the most recent season yet, my TBW list is huge but I am working on it.
