Avengers Endgame Review
It was good not great. Since this is not going to go up until sometime in july i'm not going to worry about spoilers. That being said spoilers ahead, read at our own caution. Not in any order.
Endgame was a good movie but the overall plot of time travel is way over done and tired. There are dozens of movies with time travel being the only way to save the day. I thought marvel was going to do something better, something more unique than relay on an old trope to save the day. Although Endgame didn't use time travel the way that it normally is. Instead of using time travel to go back and do the original fight with thanos differently they instead used time travel to go collect the infinity stones themselves, to undo what thanos did. So there use of time travel was different but the overall use of time travel; is overused and was predictable as being what they were gonna do 30 minutes in.
They tried to be different on that they way that they tried to do was confusing. It is hard for everyone to understand how their version on time travel is working. The way i understood it was they went back to the past collected the infinity stones and revered thanos snap. At the end Cap went back into the past to return the stones to where they took them from, which from what i understood doing that made sure that the past didn't change. Their past road where still the same because they returned the stones to where they took them so to the past, they were never gone.
Infinity war was so shocking in that everyone dies but it kind of feel flat when you realized that all the main characters were alive, main being Iron man, captain america, black widow, hulk, thor and hawkeye. All of these people where in the original avengers, all of them minus black widow and hawkeye have their own movies. I think it would have been more devastating if one of them had been disintegrated at the end of infinity war. This to me made the beginning of endgame feels kind of superstial. They weren’t upset because they lost people, most of their main family was still there, it felt like this need to change what happened steamed more from the need to win. I would have been more devastated if Captain america had dies and Bucky would have finally been given the chance to fight for steve.
Captain marvel is the newest avenger, her solo movie came out right before endgame, but there's no saying that everyone that say endgame also saw captain marvel. If they didn't see captain marvel then they don't know her or her powers or what she does. So her only introduction was the end credit in infinity war. That isnt enough, it doesn't give the other avengers her backstory with Fury or why he called her or why they should trust her.the next scene they're all going to kill Thanos and the working together to monitor the planet. But we don't see why they’ve included her so completely, the writing did not give us that emotion connect to care about her.
They also didn't utilise captain marvel’s power or abilities, while i can understand, because she's so powerful, they didn't want her to immediately come in and save the day no problem. They also didn't use Rocket enough, he's so smart they could have used him more. He could have been the natural comedic relief, instead of forcing all this comedy in every other scene, it came off as trying too hard to be funny when it would have been better to let the scene be serious.
Black widow dying wasn't a huge disappointment to me. I thought it was a good ending to her story however, i did think it would have been an even bigger tear jerker to have hawkeye sacrifice himself to get his family back.
Captain america’s ending was not what i was expecting, at all. Steve choosing to stay in the past felt like a cheap ending. During his character arc, steve grew past needing to fight for that future. He accepted that peggy had moved on and lived her own life after he went into the ice. It felt like his character was taking a step back instead of moving forward. It was dissapoting.
That seemed to be a contimuse flaw with these characters in this movie. Thor’s whole character was destroyed. Thor’s depression and anxiety made him over eat, over drink and not take care of himself, thus making him fat. That in itself is not the issue, the issues that come from it was that it was made into a joke. It wasn't taken seriously, noone asked him if he was ok. The scene where thor was able to talk to him mom was nice but he had already made peace with her death, he hadn’t made peace with loki’s. I think he should have talked to loki. I've seen fans talking on the internet about how him calling the hammer ot himself and saying he's still worthy. Is a message that you are still worthy even if your depressed, but how am i supposed to believe that? When it is treated like a joke the whole movie.
It was awesome that banner had fully accepted the hulk as apart of him but it felt like shrek was in the movie, it constantly pulled me out the film every time he was on screen because i just wanted to laugh. It really took away from the film.
Finally, my last point i didn't understand why thanos was so strong. The movies never fully explained why thanos was so strong, why were the avengers having such a hard time defeating him? It's never explained or made known what really was his main motivation. It was left me feeling more confused than anything else.
